The Big News: Taylor Swift fought off other tween sensations David Archuleta and the Twilight soundtrack to grab the top spot, with her Fearless selling 592,000 copies to crush the competition. (More than 20 percent of those were digital downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan.)  American Idol runner-up David Archuleta’s self-titled debut settled in at #2 with 183,000 albums in a debut-heavy week that found six new releases penetrating the top ten. Christina Aguilera’s Target-exclusive greatest hits collection Keeps Gettin’ Better claimed the number nine spot.

Editor’s note: Taylor Swift released her self-titled debut album on October 24, 2006. Swift wrote or co-wrote all of the songs on the album, which debuted at #19 on the Billboard 200 and sold more than 61,000 during its first week. So it looks like if we compare David’s debut release to Taylor’s, David out-sold her by 122, 000 copies during the first week of sales. 🙂

  1. What number of sales the first week is considered good? I would think David’s numbers are great for his debut CD but I guess to be fair, how does his numbers compare to other Idols’ debut CD? I have never followed sales numbers before so I don’t know if David’s number of sales are within target range or not? Could someone help me with this question? Orlando…do you know how Kelly’s CD did the first week of her debut album?

  2. The following information is from mjsbigblog.com:

“Congrats David, on a great first week! The continued success of singles released off the album should keep the sales numbers healthy in the coming weeks. David outpaced both T-Pain and the popular compilation series Now That’s What I Call Music. Very impressive.

From Kirsten, stats from Idol 2nd place finishers, posted in this week’s Sales Thread:

    1. Clay – “Measure of a Man” (Oct 14, 2003) – 612,859 (# 1)
    2. Bo – “The Real Thing” (December 13, 2005) – 226,976 (# 4)
    3 David A – “David Archuleta” (November 11, 2008) – 183K (#2)
    4. Katharine – “Katharine McPhee” (January 30, 2007) – 115,761 (# 2)
    5. Blake – “Blake Lewis” (December 4, 2007) – 98K (#10)
    6. Justin – “Justin Guarini” (June 10, 2003) – 57,000 (# 20)
    7. Diana – “Blue Skies” (December 7, 2004) – 47,000 ( # 52)

I updated the list with David’s numbers. Keeping in mind the steep decline in record sales the last couple of years, David’s numbers this week are very good, indeed.

Kirsten also posted stats for all Idols, and David comes in at #10, behind Jennifer Hudson.”

  3. And FANS OF DAVID reports that CRUSH must be Platinum by now!!!

THIS IS AWESOME!!!!! : ) CONGRATULATIONS DAVID!!!!

  4. YAY!! Go, David! 🙂

And thanks for that bit about Taylor. That’s quite interesting!

  5. This is great for a debut album from the american idol runner up -with so many other releases this week by well etablished music artists. Taking this CD sales along with the iTunes downloads – the ablum is a great success – and will continue to generate sales as many of the songs on this album will do well as singles release.
